A USDOT number identifies a company operating commercial vehicles for the purposes of safety monitoring and compliance. Businesses must register for a USDOT number before operating vehicles used in interstate commerce that meet certain weight, passenger, or hazardous materials thresholds. Many states also require a USDOT number for certain intrastate commercial operations.

New motor carriers, freight brokers, and freight forwarders starting operations. Common triggers include:
- Starting a new trucking or hauling business
- Operating a vehicle over 10,001 lbs gross vehicle weight in interstate commerce
- Transporting hazardous materials requiring a safety permit
- Transporting passengers in interstate commerce (9+ for compensation, or 16+ not for compensation)
